About
Me - Melissa Cody
I started painting on rocks when I was 14
years
old and living on the east coast of Florida. Somehow I had
acquired an acrylic paint set and because I loved the small and smooth
round rocks I found at the beach, the two came together!
I
started out painting my cartoon face
doodles onto the rocks along with
strawberries, fruit, and other cutsie stuff.
When Nike sneakers
with the "swoosh"
on them became popular, I painted rocks that looked
like
sneakers and gave them different colors swooshes. These
became a
hit and I sold them in school along with some of my
other little
rocks.
When I moved back
to Massachusetts at
the age of 16, I brought home a few buckets
of unpainted
Florida rocks and stored them away until I took up painting
again 10 years later. I painted
sporadically as a
hobby, mostly for gifts or ornaments for our
tree. As my
daughter was growing up, I would always introduce her to painting in
different ways. Finger painting, using stampers,
brush
painting, and eventually rock painting. Ultimately, she enjoys watching
me paints rather than painting herself. To have her come over to
my painting area and
swoon when something is particularly cute or "cool" gives me
the
greatest satisfaction. Of course, she does provide construction
criticism too...sometimes taken, sometimes not.
My painting and creating hit a fever pitch
during
the summer of 2005 when I started to paint on large rocks as garden
bugs and continued on into the Christmas season with the
desire to
make special gifts for giving vs. buying. My
husband thinks I am nuts to want to paint so much, especially
my
"bugs". To my surprise, he suggested I make a doctor themed
bug
rock for our nephew who is a gastroenterologist as a Christmas
gift. I researched the occupation and searched Google images
to
create a unique rock that my husband really liked and our nephew did
too! I call these my Occu-Bugs. A four
month
odyssey
of late
nights and lots of trial and error turned into the development
of
new creations such as my whimsical,
themed rocks,
googlys,
and the Occu-Bugs.
I received a lot of encouragement from my
sister and friends to consider selling my creations
and
so...I am! I hope you enjoy your time here and thank you for
visiting!
